Places to stop. Paikan identiteetistä – huoltoasemat monokulttuurin ilmentyminä.

Abstract

Tämä taiteen maisterin opinnäyte käsittelee valokuvasarjaa Places to Stop, sen syntyä ja aihepiiriä: paikan identiteettiä. Tutkielma selvittää teoksen lähtökohtia ja sijoittaa taiteellisen osuuden nykytaiteen kontekstiin. Opinnäytteen kirjallisen osan kohteena oleva valokuvasarja Places to Stop koostuu öisistä huoltoasemista, jotka on kuvattu vuosina 2010-2015 yhteensä 22 eri maassa ympäri Eurooppaa ja Pohjois-Amerikkaa. Places to Stop -valokuvasarja on esitetty kahdessa yksityisnäyttelyssä ja seitsemässä ryhmänäyttelyssä eri maissa vuosina 2012-2014. Valokuvasarja toimii lähtökohtana teoreettiselle viitekehykselle. Paikan identiteetti ja sen esittäminen valokuvassa on ensisijainen tutkimuskysymys.

Työssä pohditaan, mitä kuvalla voi kertoa ja miten kuva välittää kulttuurista informaatiota. Sarjallisuuden kautta käsitellään monokulttuurin – globaalistumisen seurauksena levinneen länsimaisen yhtenäiskulttuurin – teemaa: esiintyykö länsimainen kulttuuri kaikkialla samanlaisena ja miten tätä voi tarkastella valokuvan keinoin.

Tekstissä avataan erityisesti käsitteitä paikka, identiteetti ja representaatio sekä pohditaan, miten Places to Stop asettuu tätä teoreettista kehystä vasten. Näkökulma on taidelähtöinen, ja tutkielmassa vertaillaan nykypäivän valokuvataiteessa käytettyjä keinoja käsitellä esitettyjä kysymyksiä ja suhteutetaan kirjoittajan omaa työskentelyä niihin. Paikkoihin ja epäpaikkoihin ja niiden tutkimiseen liittyviä kysymyksiä käsitellään erityisesti humanistisen maantieteen kannalta ja tuodaan toisaalta tekijän omien kuvauskokemusten kautta esiin konkreettisesti. Matkustamista, paikan hahmottamista ja tutkimista pohditaan mm. karttojen, ilmakuvien ja Google Street View’n katukuvien kautta. Lisäksi käsitellään arkkitehtuurin ja rakennetun maiseman kuvaukseen perehtyneitä valokuvaajia ja suuntauksia 1960-luvulta tähän päivään esimerkiksi New Topographics -ryhmän ja Düsseldorfin koulukunnan valokuvaajien kautta.

Places to Stopin keskiössä ovat huoltoasemat, mutta niiden kautta myös laajemmin monokulttuuri ja öljy-yhtiöiden levittämä globaali toimintamalli ja autoiluun perustuva elämäntapa. Riippuu katsojan tulkinnasta onko kyseessä kriittinen vai romantisoiva näkemys. Kuvat ovat dokumentteja yhden aikakauden – autoilua ihannoivan kulttuurin – monumenteista.

This Master of Arts thesis studies the photographic series Places to Stop and its theme: the identity of a place. The study brings light to the background of the series and situates the artistic part of the work in the context of contemporary art. Places to Stop is a series of nocturnal gas stations that have been photographed between 2010 and 2015 in 22 countries around Europe and North America. Places to Stop has been shown in two solo shows and in seven group exhibitions between 2012 and 2014. The photographic series is the starting point for a theoretical framework.

The essential study question is the identity of a place and its representation in a photograph. The work investigates what an image can tell and how an image delivers cultural information. The theme of monoculture – a unified western culture spread due to globalization – is dealt through seriality: does the western culture appear in a similar way everywhere, and how can this be observed through the means of photography.

The text opens the notions of place, identity and representation and studies how Places to Stop can be seen against this theoretical framework. The point of view is art-based, and the study compares the means used to deal with the questions in the contemporary art photography. The author’s own work is compared to this background. The questions dealing with places and non-places are seen in the light of humanistic geography and on the other hand in the light of the author’s own experiences in photographic practice. Maps, aerial photography and the street photographs of Google Street View are among others examples for studying different ways of traveling, exploring and perceiving a place. Architectural photography and photography on constructed environment from 1960’s till today are studied through the examples of the photography artists in the New Topographics group and the Düsseldorf School.

Gas stations are in the core of Places to Stop, but through them the work examines monoculture, car culture and the globalized culture spread by oil companies. It is up to the viewer’s interpretation if the series holds a critical or romanticizing approach to the topic. The images are documents of monuments of an era, where car culture is praised.
