Maskuliinisuuden fantasia

Abstract

Vaatteet kehon yllä ilmentävät käyttäjänsä sukupuolta. Millä tavalla keho itsessään osallistuu kulttuurillisen miessukupuolen rakentamiseen? Teoreetikot, kuten Judith Butler, ovat osoittaneet, että sukupuolen käsite on rakentunut sosiaalisesti tietyssä historiallisessa prosessissa. Siitä huolimatta kehon materiaalien luonne on tosiasia. Kehot tulevat sukupuolisesti koodattuina, ja mieheyden kulttuurinen symboli on penis. Pukusuunnittelija käyttää työssään hyväksi näitä kulttuurillisesti koodautuneita materiaalisia ominaisuuksia. Siitä syystä on perusteltua tarkastella mekanismeja, jotka koodaavat materiaalisen “kehon” kulttuuriseksi “mieheksi”.

Keväällä 2017 suunnittelin ja toteutin sarjan miesten alushousuja, joiden kautta tutkin omia alitajuisia käsityksiäni mieheydestä, maskuliinisuudesta ja mieseroottisuudesta. Yhteistyössä valokuvaaja Ragnar Rael gústssonin kanssa aloin tutkia oman suunnittelukäytäntöni sekä kulttuurisen mieheyden välisiä yhteyksiä. Syntyi sarja valokuvia, joissa esiinnyn itse, ja joiden kautta tutkin normatiivisen maskuliinisuuden ja feminiinisyyden konsepteja. Tällä tavalla työ tavoittaa uutta ymmärrystä biologisen kehon, puvun sekä sosiaalisen sukupuolen ilmiasun keskinäisistä jännitteistä.

Clothes on a man are used in constructing gender identity. How does the body itself contribute of to the construction of the male gender? Social theorists such as Judith Butler, have claimed that the body is socially constructed. And yet, the body is a material matter of fact. Bodies come gender coded, and the penis as the cultural symbol of maleness. Costume design practises operate on those material levels. erefore it is fundamentally important to understand the cultural mechanisms that make the material“ body” into a cultural “man”.

In spring 2017 I designed and realized a collection of men’s underwear that study my personal conseption of maleness, masculinity and male erotica. Collaborating with photographer Ragnar Rael gústsson I created a series of photographs, where I perfrom myself, and where I study the connections between my costume design practises and cultural perseption of gender. By exploring the in-between areas of normative conception of masculinity and femininity, this work aims to study the fragility of the gender system. is results new understanding of the tension between the biological body and the costume that embodies the expression of social gender.
