Floral stories - An interior fabric collection inspired by the Victorian period

Abstract

This practice-based thesis is placed in the context of interior industry and business of interior textiles. The thesis produces a Victorian inspired residential interior textile capsule collection aimed at United Kingdom (UK) market and designed for the Turkish weaving mill Vanelli. Required performance as residential interior textiles is remarkably different to interior textiles for public spaces, known as contract textiles. The collection has a storytelling approach in the design process as well as in the marketing. A capsule collection with a storytelling approach is a new way for Vanelli to address the UK market.

The thesis examines the British textile industry and interior textiles produced during the Victorian period. The research analyses floral patterns, which were dominant print design motifs in the Victorian period. Reasons behind the popularity of florals and garden motifs in Victorian period, are addressed in the study. Also, the research examines how the Victorian period is represented in modern interiors today. Furthermore, the background research portrays the interior textile industry and British textile editors relevant for this thesis. The research examines the use of a storyline as a tool for designing and marketing. The methods used in this research are literature review and interviews of interior textile industry professionals. The objective of the research is to support the design process of a capsule collection.

The thesis consists of a written component and the design case. Based on the background research findings and an inspiration source, the book “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett (1911), a residential interior textile capsule collection was created. The capsule collection was produced at the Turkish weaving mill Vanelli. The floral collection consists of printed and woven interior fabrics for drapery, upholstery and accessory purposes. In addition to the collection, a storybook was designed as a sales tool for supporting the collection at sales trips.

The thesis offers a review of Victorian interior textiles and floral pattern styles. It introduces aspects of using storytelling in designing a targeted textile collection. The thesis provides a compact summary of British textile editors and interior textile industry in overall. The outcome of the thesis, the capsule collection and a storybook, provides Vanelli a new way to address one of their largest markets.

Tämä käytäntöön perustuva, “practice-based” opinnäyte sijoittuu sisustustekstiiliteollisuuden ja markkinoiden kontekstiin. Opinnäyte tuottaa turkkilaiselle kutomolle Vanellille suunnitellun Viktoriaanisesta aikakaudesta inspiroituneen kapselikokoelman, joka on kohdennettu Iso-Britannian markkinoille. Kokoelman kankaat on suunniteltu kodinsisustukseen. Kotikäyttöön suunniteltujen ja julkisen puolen kankaiden vaatimustasoissa on suuria eroja. Kokoelmalla on tarinallinen lähestymistapa sekä suunnittelussa että markkinoinnissa, mikä on Vanellille uusi tapa lähestyä Iso-Britannian markkinoita.

Opinnäyte tutkii Iso-Britannian tekstiiliteollisuutta, sekä Viktoriaanisena aikana tuotettuja si-sustustekstiileitä. Tutkimus analysoi kukkakuoseja, jotka olivat ominainen kuosiaihe Viktoriaanisena aikana, ja pohtii syitä kukka- ja puutarha-aiheiden suosiolle. Se pyrkii myös selvittämään, millä tavalla Viktoriaaninen aikakausi näkyy nykysisustuksessa. Lisäksi taustatutkimus kuvailee sisustustekstiilitoimialaa, sekä Iso-Britannian tekstiilieditoreita, jotka ovat olennaisia opinnäytteelle. Tutkimus tutkii tarinan käyttöä työkaluna suunnittelussa sekä markkinoinnissa. Tutkimusmenetelminä tässä opinnäytteessä on käytetty kirjallisuustutkimusta, sekä sisustustekstiilialan ammattilaisten haastatteluita. Tutkimuksen tavoite on tukea kapselikokoelman suunnitteluprosessia.

Opinnäyte koostuu kirjoitetusta osasta ja suunnitteluprojektista. Sisustustekstiilikokoelma luotiin perustuen taustatutkimuksen löydöksiin ja inspiraation lähteeseen Frances Hodgson Burnettin kirjaan ”Salainen puutarha” (1911). Kapselikokoelma tuotettiin turkkilaisessa kutomossa Vanellissa. Kukka-aiheinen kokoelma koostuu painetuista ja kudotuista sisustustekstiileistä verho, verhoilu ja somistus tarkoituksiin. Kokoelman lisäksi suunniteltiin sitä tukeva myynnin työkalu ”storybook” myyntimatkoille.

Tämä opinnäytetyö tarjoaa katsauksen Viktoriaanisiin sisustustekstiileihin sekä kukkakuosityyleihin. Opinnäyte tutustuttaa tarinan käyttöön kohdennetun tekstiilikokoelman suunnittelussa, sekä tarjoaa tiiviin esittelyn Brittiläisistä tekstiilieditoreista ja sisustustekstiilitoimialasta. Opinnäytteen lopputulos, kapselikokoelma sekä ”storybook”, tarjoavat Vanellille uuden tavan lähestyä yhtä heidän suurimmista markkina-alueistaan.
