Ensimmäinen katsoja - kuvaaminen ohjaamisen metodina dokumentaarisessa elokuvassa

Abstract

Tämä kirjallinen maisterin opinnäytetyö on tutkimusmatka elokuvanteon prosessiin itse kuvaavan ohjaajan näkökulmasta. Se pyrkii avaamaan tekijän luovan työskentelyn kautta niitä elokuvanteon prosessin vaiheita, joissa kaksoisroolissa toimiminen erityisesti korostuu. Näitä vaiheita tarkastellaan pääasiallisesti hyötynäkökohtien kautta, sillä opinnäyte etsii perusteluja tekijän valinnalle toimia kuvaaja-ohjaaja kaksoisroolissa. Näkökulma on vahvasti tekijyyteen nojaava ja argumentoi sen puolesta, että itse kuvaaminen on opinnäytteen kirjoittajalle välttämätön ohjaamisen metodi maailman jäsentämiseksi elokuvan keinoin.

Opinnäyte etenee henkilökohtaisen essee kirjoittamisen, prosessikuvauksen ja lähdeaineiston vuoropuheluna. Maisterin opinnäytetyön taiteellisen osan, ​Solitaire Dance / Näkymättömät​ (Superreel, 2020) -elokuvan kuvaustyöpäiväkirja vie paikoin yksityiskohtaisiin huomioihin konkreettisen tekemisen ääreltä. Aikalaisohjaajien ajatukset, dokumentaarisen elokuvan teoriat sekä elokuvahistoriallinen konteksti sitovat opinnäytteen laajemmin tekijyyden pohtimiseksi kuvaavan ohjaajan näkökulman kautta.

Kirjallinen opinnäytetyö pyrkii tarjoamaan samaistumispintaa dokumentaarisen elokuvan parissa jo työskenteleville kuvaaja-ohjaajille sekä tarjoamaan kirjoittajan jäsentämää kokemuksellista ja teoreettista tietoa heille, jotka ovat kiinnostuneita aloittamaan työskentelyn yhden hengen yksikkönä.

This master`s thesis is an exploration of documentary filmmaking process from the point of view of a director working as his own cinematographer. Through the creative methods of the author, the thesis tries to open up the specific phases within the filmmaking process where the double role highlights. Master`s thesis also tries to rationalize the author`s decision on actively choosing the double role and therefore focuses on the beneficial sides of this choice. Aspect relies strongly on the authorship and arguments, that shooting the film by himself is a method of directing which the author can`t live without in order to construe the world with the language of cinema.

Text proceeds through dialogue between personal essay writing, process description and source material. A work diary from the shootings of the author's graduation film Solitaire Dance​ (Superreel, 2020) takes the reader into the more detailed notes on concrete filming situations. Reflections upon contemporary filmmakers along theories of documentary filmmaking and film historical context binds the thesis into a larger contemplation on authorship through a point of view of a cinematographer-director.

The aim of this written part of master`s thesis is to offer an identificational ground to the people already working in the field of documentary filmmaking as cinematographer-directors. Furthermore it brings the individual tacit knowledge and theories to a general use for those interested in starting to work as a one person unit.
